I like this one by Tony Lurie, but how much of a game has already been determined without even moving the first pawn? My current opinion is that a lot of it.

Chess pressure

Comic strip by Mordillo, in which he plays with the idea of chess sides and races. Today Anand and Topalov are playing in Sofia. It is the second game of their match for the World Championship. Indeed, the audience favours the Bulgarian, and there will not be quite half of them supporting Anand. It may be that playing at home turns a disadvantage due to an excess of pressure, but the unequal situation reminded me of this vignette.

Fox Playing Hen

I cannot see much of the chessboard. It is so dark in the burrow. It is a 6x6 chessboard. The fox is playing as White and the hen moves the Black pieces. The fox reminds me of Firefox.

Y ahora te mato la dama

And now I'll kill your Queen!. This is a simple vignette, looks like taken from and old book. Again chess as a metaphore of the war. Where is the fun? Probably in the fact that it is ridiculous to wear a uniform to play a table game, or maybe showing intense emotion, the small cannons have some charm here. It is a pity that the cannon is not a piece in Western chess (it is in Chinese chess, though). In total I would say this comic strip is not funny, but it is charming.

Bobby Fischer and Osama Bin Laden

Yesterday we mentioned the times in which Bobby Fischer was arrested at Narita Airport in Tokyo. Also from 2005, we have this comic strip by Corky in Star Bulletin (I assume) in which Osama Bin Laden congratulates himself for not being chased by the U.S. full-power, as the former World Chess Champion was.

Spanish royal family

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía appear as King and Queen, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia are bishops, the King's daughters (Infantas) Elena and Cristina are Knights and their husbands Marichalar and Urdangarín are the Rooks.

This was published after it was unveiled the King would have his 8th grandchild. And the joke goes like:

"Okay, now you can stop having children. We are just enough for chess"
